Anton Yudintsev on World of Planes
Interviewed by Matt "Desode" Mooney



Recently I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to talk to Anton Yudintsev, CEO of Gaijin Entertainment, about their new in-development MMO, World of Planes.

Q. Anton, first I want to thank you and Gaijin for taking the time to talk with SimHQ about the exciting new title Gaijin is developing: World of Planes.

A. Hi, Matt, thank you.

Q. A lot of us have been expecting a Wings of Prey sequel, but a Gaijin flight sim MMO was not on our radar at all. Let’s start out with a little bit about how Gaijin came up with the idea to do a WWII MMO. How long has World of Planes been in the works? Is World of Planes the sequel to Wings of Prey?

A. We had made the concept and started some work in late 2008 (even before Wings of Prey was released). Just because we always thought that playing with real players is fun and challenging.

For more than a year the game has been developing with most of our resources. Of course, World of Planes has some things in common with Wings of Prey, but most of the code was reworked or made from scratch. I mean Flight model, AI, ballistics, render, mission design, and missions structure, as you can see all of the main parts.

Also the game will have 4-5 times more content (on the start) than Wings of Prey does. And of course, we are going to update it and add more.

Q. Anton, the sim community has certain basic requirements they need in their flight games, so I'm hoping today we can talk about some of these important features. To start off, what can we expect from the World of Planes damage model system? Is it more advanced than what we saw in Wings of Prey? Will plane damage affect the flight characteristics of the aircrafts?

A. Yes, the damage system has been improved too. The visualization part of the damage model is still a work in progress. Working on damage models and tweaking the damage model is an infinite job. We are gathering information from players and historical sources and tweaking it. Also, we will, of course, tweak it during the Closed Beta.

Q. I know one major complaint with the FMs from Wings of Prey was the lack of aircraft shaking right before stalling. How about the flight models in World of Planes, are they the same as what we've seen in the latest patched version of Wings of Prey? Or are they tweaked even further?

A. Yes, we have added some shaking before stalling and in some other reasonable cases. Flight model is not the same, but we, of course, have used our WoP experience.

Q. Will it have a chat system for communication among players or will players need to use some kind of VOIP software?

A. Only one comment about VOIP — usually good teams use VOIP software just to be in touch even before they launch the game. So I don't expect that players will stop doing that.

Q. What kind of individual pilot progression system will there be in World of Planes? Will there be separate unlocks and abilities for say a pilot and a gunner? Also, will the unlocks and upgrades be historically accurate in nature? I ask this because for a majority of the flight sim community, when we hear the words "unlocks" or "upgradable weapons", we automatically become concerned the balance and historical aspects of the game will be lost.

A. Keeping a historically accurate feeling is one of our priorities. Of course no game can be 100% historically accurate for lots of different reasons, and most of them are not technical, but natural. For instance, this is true for so many different, but essential, parts of real life, like feeling accelerations, influence of pilots physical strengths, and even economics. For example: Planes in real life could be very good, but too expensive or unreliable, or they appeared only later in the war. All of these parts in games are either ignored or just implemented "somehow".

We don't want to make our game "Bf109 vs. La-7" simulation (choose any). For example, jets at the end of WW2 were cool — but they had certain flaws, which could sometimes not be easily noticed in game — and we have to balance that. And, although balance is the key to success, still immersion matters a lot. So, there will be no "upgradeable" weapons, but there will be different modifications of planes (like it was).

Q. How much depth will be involved in the persistent MMO war? Example: Say my squadron destroys a major industrial factory belonging to the axis powers, would that strategic victory play a role in the war’s overall, possible outcome?

A. Something like that. However, our Global War feature is still in development, and can significantly change before it will be released.

Q. How long will one MMO campaign last before one side wins? Is there a set time limit or will the war rage on until one sides resources are exhausted?

A. The same here. I would like to answer all questions about Global War later. Currently, it is still under development.

Q. Will we see any kind of full mission builder and quick mission builder in World of Planes?

A. Well, I think the answer is 'yes', at least they are already created at the moment. Not sure if we'll release them at CBT (Closed Beta Test) as we don't want players to test their own missions instead of balancing the game.

Q. While World of Planes is a MMO, I'm sure a lot of gamers are wondering: Will there be anything in there for the offline gamer to enjoy?

A. We'll see. It is not our main priority. Even Wings of Prey was played mostly by players with good and persistent internet connection — and that was mostly an offline game, it was sold in retail stores and so on. Blizzard, with their Starcraft2, showed that most players are playing with Internet. But we are thinking about adding some offline play later too. This is just not our main priority.

Q. Could you tell us a little bit about what kind of DRM (Digital Rights Management) World of Planes will be using?

A. It is an online game. That means that some essential parts of the game are physically based on game servers. Also that means that the game will be constantly updated. So there is no need in any DRM.

Q. Will World of Planes also feature co-op gameplay?

A. Yes.

Q. One of the Flight Sim communities favorite past times is creating skins for their planes. Will World of Planes give players the ability to create their own custom skins to use in the game?

A. Yes, we really loved some of the skins that were created for Wings of Prey. So we are planning to have this feature in game.

Q. What will be the player count for the online battles? 32, 64, 128, or as far up as 256?

A. We believe that the optimal number is 32. That's not a technical question — we can support up to 256 players or even more. This is just a design decision.

Q. How big are the online maps? Are they bigger than what we saw in Wings of Prey?

A. We don't think that for a battle focused online game we need bigger maps. However, we are planning bigger maps for the Jet planes.

Q. Does Gaijin have a list of aircrafts for the game? I know there were a lot of different aircrafts in WWII... How far will World of Planes go into the variety of available aircrafts? Or will this be a work in progress with more planes released via DLC as the MMO progresses and grows?

A. The game is going to be constantly updated. There were at least 5,000 of different planes in WWII, so we have lots of options to expand.

The list of aircraft on start-up we will keep as a secret for now.

Q. One last question, Anton, and I'll let you get back to work, because I'm sure you're very busy.

I saw somewhere in an announcement that World of Planes will not feature an arcade mode and everyone will start out at a Sim level? Is that rumor true?

A. No. We believe that involving new players in aviation is a very important mission, so there will still be an arcade mode.

Q. Anton, I could ask you questions all day long, but I understand you can't let all the secrets out of the bag just yet.

I really appreciate you taking the time to answer these questions so the SimHQ Flight community can have a glimpse into this interesting project that Gaijin is developing.

A. Thank you for the questions and they are always welcome!

Our work (and life, as we all spend days and nights in the office) is about our players, so your questions are the main way to understand your needs.

Closing Thoughts

Every flight fan should be keeping an eye on World of Planes, and from what we're learning about this new title, it carries great potential in a genre many of us truly love.

It appears Gaijin has their ear to the community, and in my opinion, they're very open to constructive feedback from flight simulation fans.
I have a feeling World of Planes will, no doubt, become what its players want it to be. Such is the way of a MMO, because without the players, the game dies.

One thing is for sure, Gaijin has a true love in their hearts for aircrafts and the joy of flight. All of us here know flight combat games are a niche market, so it's great to see that an up and coming developer like Gaijin has a real passion for creating flight oriented games.

World of Planes: Kirill Yudintsev Interview

We sat down with Chief Creative Officer of Gaijin Entertainment, Kirill Yudintsev, to discuss about War of Planes, the new upcoming flying and flight MMO, and about the strange competition with another similar title...
MMORPGITALIA: You know that Wargaming.net will publish a game very similar to World of Planes. What will be the most important feature that your game will have to win the competition?

Kirill Yudintsev: Of course, we do. I should mention that we started to work at our project long before them. So, we announced our game one month and a half before they announced their game, we also announced launch of the closed beta test and opened the World of Planes website a week earlier than they did for World of WarPlanes. As far as the advantages of our project, there are so many of them. World of Planes offers players a very diverse avia simulation experience. First, World of Planes has PvE - Dynamic Campaign, Custom Mission, Single Mission, Quick Editor – and a huge selection of battles against AI opponents, offered both for single player and for cooperative playing with fellow virtual pilots. Second, the flight model and the performance characteristics of our aircraft are worked out so that we can offer not only a semi-arcade flight mode for beginners, but also an advanced realistic mode of aircraft control and combat. This feature should be appreciated by skilled virtual pilots as well as beginners who want to get the full range of experiences from piloting the realistic aircraft we have in the game. Third, we have worked and continue to work on very rich game content. We already have over one hundred aircraft to choose from, with numerous models of ground vehicles and naval ships participating in the game under AI control - and this is just the beginning.

MMORPGITALIA: Could you talk about the progression of our character in the WoP?

Kirill Yudintsev: Players will improve the skills of the crew: pilots, mechanics, shooters (with traits like vigilance, endurance, tolerance to overload, and others). Also there are physical parameters that may vary for different people and can be developed with training - stamina, accuracy (for AI shooters), vigilance and observation skill, resistance to stresses, and so on. Also, the player will develop his plane, which involves obtaining new suspended weaponry and improving them, ammunition selection, using the best fuel, and sometimes a better maintained engine and more reliable weapons. (Initially players get a pretty old and worn-out plane.)

MMORPGITALIA: What will be the structure of the game at launch? How many battleground will have in the game?

Kirill Yudintsev: To ensure fair play on any map and in any battle scenario, players will be drawn first to a lobby in the required amount so the game would be the same for all. At this moment we have more than 20 locations. Their size in the current version of the game is always more than 65x65km, and it reaches 100x100km. For jets in the Korean theatre of war, we plan to have areas of ​​200x200km.

MMORPGITALIA: How each battleground will influence the whole war?

Kirill Yudintsev: Our game is going to have a Global war mode. We’ll reveal the details later, but the general idea is this: players choose their side, which can lose or win. The fights are not random, but have a historical background, and the storyline for each new battle is determined by the results of previous battles.

MMORPGITALIA: Could you talk about the item shop?

Kirill Yudintsev: We will not be selling in-game items or any other elements that might affect the game balance. A system of premium accounts will be offered to give players some bonuses for speeding up leveling, however getting access to new planes is going to be done by all players on their own.

MMORPGITALIA: Will there be a sort of hierarchy for clans/units in WoP?

Kirill Yudintsev: We plan to introduce a squad system, which will be able to gather friends in arms. Probably, this feature will be available a bit after the game is released.


MMORPGITALIA: What kind of customization will the planes have?

Kirill Yudintsev: You'll be able to customize planes as much as possible without conflicting with the game’s principles. So a P-39 will remain a P-39, but you’ll be allowed to change its alignment, use better fuel, as well as load different types of ammunition and add some bombs – that’s what players will be free to do anyway. Perhaps we’ll let ourselves to get a bit too far and work at features such as extended ammunition, radios, and installation of oxygen equipment and so on. Regarding purely external modifications - yes, there’s a lot of this in World of Planes: painting, drawing symbols with different decals or pin-up girls, stenciled text, etc.

MMORPGITALIA: Could you explain what level of realism we will find in the game?

Kirill Yudintsev: The flight model we use is as historically accurate as possible, so tactical and technical characteristics of all models will match up with real real-world counterparts. We believe that it is much more exciting to pilot realistic planes than fictional ones. We’ve also finalized the damage system by modifying the one that was used in our Wings of Prey game. Generally we tend to stick to logic: one or two well-aimed hits of machine gun fire, and almost any plane will be doomed. In addition to the overall consistency of historical facts, this damage system gives the game its intensity and drive.

MMORPGITALIA: Will there be leaderboards and rankings for players/clans?

Kirill Yudintsev: Sure. World of Planes is a massively multiplayer online game, and it couldn’t exist without elements of socialization for gamers.

MMORPGITALIA: Will have PvP missions only in the game or both PvE and PvP ones?

Kirill Yudintsev: As I said before, our game is not only an entire online world of multiplayer air battles, but it’s also rich in various PvE missions, such as dynamic multiplayer missions and single player missions. Plus World of Planes players will be able to create their own missions and then offer them to other players.

MMORPGITALIA: What are your plans for beta and release? What's the state of the game right now?

Kirill Yudintsev: It is too early to speak of the exact date of release. But the beta test, at least the closed beta, is just around the corner, and we’ll be giving a considerable number of lucky players the chance to be the first to see World of Planes. And of course we’re counting on their help, so we can do our best to optimize the game!

70th Anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal

Guadalcanal Special Event

The Guadalcanal Campaign, also known as «Operation Watchtower», was the first brilliant and undeniable victory of the Allies in the Pacific theatre of WWII. A sudden, massive attack of the Allies' joint forces paralyzed the further advance of the Japanese Imperial army in the region and laid the foundation for the defeat of Japan.

The Guadalcanal Campaign was started in August 1942, to protect a Pacific convoy route between the United States and Australia and New Zealand. The initial landing of Allied forces on the islands of Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Florida were a great surprise for the Japanese army, caught in the process of Japanese bridgehead expansion in the region. The Imperial army found itself locked and occupied in front of the aggressive offensive actions of Allied troops.

The brilliant success of the sudden attack shocked the Japanese General Staff. From the late summer 'till the fall of 1942, Japan made several attempts to regain the control over this strategic region and take back the captured Guadalcanal airfield (later Henderson Field) — the key to domination in the area. These attempts led to several fierce battles on the sea, on the ground, and in the air. Joint forces of American, Australian and New Zealand troops bravely resisted the Japanese attacks and made the Imperial force abandon all hope for control of the Guadalcanal islands.

The last Japanese forces withdrawn back home in the February 1943. Resilience and courage of the Allies made this victory the breaking point of the whole Pacific campaign. Japan has completely lost strategic initiatives and didn’t managed to recover from this defeat to the very end of the WWII.

Ab Patch 1.29 wird die Möglichkeit eingeführt das Flugzeug mit unterschiedlicher Munition zu bestücken.

Ich werde hier mal die englischen Abkürzungen ins deutsche Übersetzen.





AP = armor-piercing = panzerbrechend

Ok, nochmals, Warthunder ist ein WW2 Game welches mit seinen 3 Game modes jedem eine Plattform bietet. Wenn man von ACM keine Ahnung hat, bzw einfach noch nicht soweit ist, dann sollte man es tunlichst unterlassen andere Spieler zu beleidigen. Derzeit kreißt mächtig der Banhammer, bis hoch zu lifetime Bans. Es gibt jeden Tag einige Tausende neue Spieler, da tut es nicht weh wenn wir diejenigen aussortieren die offensichtlich eine mangelhafte Erziehung genossen haben. Schöner Nebeneffekt, der Umgangston bleibt nett und so macht es auch allen Spaß



Wer sich nicht an ein gewisses Mindestmaß im Umgangston halten kann ist hier leider fehl am Platz! Weitere Diskussionen über World of Tanks und ähnliches Geschwafel werde ich ab jetzt kommentarlos löschen! Ich hoffe das war nun deutlich genug

F: Der tägliche 2x Bonus scheint nicht zu funktionieren
A: Wird zur Prüfung an die Entwickler weitergeleitet.

F: Warum haben Flugzeuge der selben Stufe nicht die gleichen Reparaturkosten?
A: Bei der Berechnung werden die Flugzeugvariante, die Effizienz, Motorleistung und Waffenbestückung in Betracht gezogen. Es ist nicht einfach, alle Flugzeuge so einzuordnen, dass sie perfekt zueinander passen. iIe 109E3 und Spitfire MkI sind in etwa miteinander vergleichbar, sie haben im Krieg gegeneinander gekämpft. Dabei hatte die E3 einen leichte Vorteile gegenüber der Spit I.


F: Wurde das Flugmodell (FM) der 109er Reihe mit 1.29 geändert?
A: Es gab kleinere Änderungen am FM. Generell sind die FMs in den verschiedenen Flugmodellen gleich. Allerdings erleichtert die Spielengine das Fliegen im Arcademodus ein wenig.

F: Wird es etwas mehr Realismus im Arcademodus geben um den Spielspaß zu erhöhen?
A: Arcade soll Spaß machen und wird wahrscheinlich so bleiben wie es ist. Eine endgültige Antwort darauf können wir nicht geben.

F: In den Historical Battles (HB) ist es ein großes Problem das man auf einer Seite bleibt. Ein Freund hat eine andere Seite gelevelt und deshalb haben wir ein Problem, gemeinsam zu spielen.
A: Wenn der World War Modus (WW) kommt wird sich alles ändern. Im Moment stehen gerade einmal zirka 20% des geplanten Spielinhaltes zur Verfügunges.


F: Wo sind die ganzen Karten im HB Modus hin, sie waren eine interessante Abwechslung?
A: Einige Karten haben noch Bugs. Sobald die Entwickler diese Fehler behoben haben, werden die Karten wieder ins Spiel integriert.


F: Was war der Grund für die Einführung der Backupflugzeuge?
A: Es gab zahlreiche Anfragen, mehr als einmal mit demselben Flugzeugtyp in die Schlacht zu ziehen. Deshalb haben wir diese Option ins Spiel eingebaut.

F: Dauert es nicht ein bisschen lange bis man im HB Modus zum Kämpfen kommt (Starten, Landen, Flug zum Schlachtfeld und zurück, etc)?

A: So war es nun einmal, man musste auf Höhe kommen, das Schachtfeld analysieren etc. Das deutsche Fliegeras Erich Hartmann sagte einmal "Wenn Du keinen Vorteil hast, dann greife nicht an!" Also ja, diese "Leerlaufzeiten" sind Teil des Spieles und sie waren wesentlich länger im richtigen Leben.


F: Was ist mit dem Wirtschaftssystem (WS) passiert und warum ist es so wie es im Moment ist?
A: Grundlegend ist es so, das wir nicht wollen, das jemand neu anfängt und in einer Woche die Stufe 20 erreicht. Vor 1.29 wurden Spieler für unerwünschte Aktionen wie vorzeitiges Verlassen des Spiels, Kamikaze o.ä. nicht bestraft. Das haben wir mit 1.29 korrigiert. Außerdem muss jede Änderung des WS zumindest ein Woche laufen, um deren Auswirkungen einschätzen zu können. Also macht Euch nicht so große Sorgen über das WS, es wird sich noch oft ändern.


F: Plant ihr einen Wipe nach der Beta?
A: Nein, ein Wipe ist nicht geplant.


F: Wird es zukünftig Patchnotes vor dem Patch geben?
A: Das ist unmöglich, wir werden jedoch den Informationsgehalt der Patchnotes zu verbessern.

F: Im Moment können sich selbst Premiumspieler keine Flugzeuge leisten, sie haben zwar viele XP aber keine Lions?
A: Wir leiten dies zur Prüfung an die Entwickler weiter.

F: Existieren Pläne für einen vierten Spielmodus (z.B. Arcade mit realistischeren FMs)?
A: So etwas ist im Moment ncht geplant, die Entwickler sind der Meinung, dass es keinen Bedarf für einen vierten Modus gibt.

F: Warum ist die Bombenlast einiger Bomber im Spiel geringer als im richtigen Leben?
A: Das wurde getan um die Balance zu wahren und zu verhindern, dass die Bomber sämtliche Bodenziele in einem Anflug vernichten.

F: Warum kann die Yer-2 mehr Bomben tragen als alle anderen Flugzeuge im Spiel?
A: Da bin ich mir nicht sicher, wir werden die Entwickler danach fragen.


F: Wird es noch mehr Ziele für taktische und strategische Bomber geben?

A: Es werden gerade neue Karten entwickelt und sie werden in das Spiel integriert, wenn sie fertig sind und getestet wurden.

A: Versuche einmal, selbst die Bordschützenpositionen zu übernehmen, keine KI wird in diesem Spiel jemals so akurat sein wie ein menschlicher Schütze.

F: Warum gibt es keine Informationen zur Standardmunition eines Flugzeuges?
A: Dies ist ein Bug und wird hoffentlich schon im nächsten Patch behoben.


F: Ist die Geschwindigkeit der verschiedenen Munitionstypen im Spiel korrekt modelliert?
A: Ja.

F: Wird der Fluglehrer noch verändert?
A: Ja, es wird noch Änderungen an der Maussteuerung geben.

F: Wird sich das WS noch ändern?
A: Ja.

F: Habt ihr Statistiken, wie lange ein Spieler benötigt, um Stufe 12 zu erreichen?
A: Wir haben natürlich Statistiken darüber, aber diese können wir leider nicht veröffentlichen.


F: Warum gibt es so große Lücken im russischen Entwicklungsbaum?
A: Es werden noch Flugzeueg hinzugefügt, allerdings braucht die DM/FM Entwicklung eine Menge Zeit.

F: Werden die Flugzeuge irgendwann einmal historisch korrekt gegeneinander antreten?
A: Ja, sobald alle Flugzeuge im Spiel sind.


F: Wieso gibt es Icons, die mir mitteilen wer Freund und Feind ist?
A: Es gab einen Patch, bei dem wir die Icons weggelassen hatten und als Ergebnis fanden alle Kämpfe in Bodennähe statt. Das wollen wir nicht.


F: Wird das Bomberfliegen noch attraktiver gemacht (z.B. der Copilot übernimmt wenn der Pilot verwundet oder tot ist oder Dronenbomber, die solange in der Formation bleiben, wie der eigene Flugstil im Rahmen des normalen Bomberfliegens bleibt)?
A: Dies ist eine exzellente Idee, wir werden sie an die Entwickler weiterleiten.


F: Existieren Pläne, eine vierten Spielmodus zu entwickeln (HB für Arcade Spieler oder HB für Simulationsspieler (Die Frage wurde im Zusammenhang mit der schlechten Sichtbarkeit von Zielen im FRB Modus gestellt)?
A: Es gibt keine Pläne für einen solchen Modus aber wir beobachten die Spieleraktivitäten und -aufteilungen und wir hören auf die Vorschläge von erfahrenen Simulationspiloten und der Community, wenn es um Veränderungen des FRB Modus geht, die diese Probleme beseitigen helfen können.


F: Linux Support?

Bei dem Spiel War Thunder (www.warthunder.com) von Gaijin Entertainment handelt es sich um ein Fre2Play MMO Combat Game mit Flugzeugen und ist thematisch in den 30er bis 50er Jahren angesiedelt ist. Derzeit befindet sich der Titel, dessen Entwicklung in 2009 startete, noch im Open-Beta-Stadium, was dem Spielspaß jedoch keinen Abbruch tut. Der Titel ist größten Teils fertig gestellt und bietet bereits jetzt mit über hundert spielbaren Flugzeugen, PvP-Multiplayer und PvE-Singleplayer Kampagnen, detaillierten Flugzeug- und Schadensmodellen sowie einer tollen Grafik jede Menge Spaß. Dank diversen Einstellungsmöglichkeiten, sowie einem Acade- und Simulations-Modus ist der Titel für Anfänger gleichermaßen wie Profis geeignet. Geplant jedoch in der Beta des Free2Play Titels noch nicht vorhanden sind auch spielbare Boden- und Wasser-Einheiten.
